How a WiFi QR code works
A WiFi QR code does not contain a link. It contains a short text record with your network name, the security type, and the password, written in a format both iOS and Android understand. When a phone camera reads it, the operating system recognises the format and offers to join the network instead of opening a browser.
That means there is nothing to install and no app on either side. Point the camera, tap the prompt, connected. It works the same on an iPhone running iOS 11 or later and on Android 10 or later, which covers effectively every phone still in use.
The important consequence: the password is inside the code. Anyone who can photograph the code can extract the password from it. That is fine for a guest network on a cafe table and a bad idea for the network your accounting laptop sits on.
Getting the details right
Two mistakes account for almost every WiFi QR code that fails to connect. The first is the network name. It has to match exactly, including capital letters and spaces, because SSIDs are case-sensitive. Copy it from your phone’s WiFi list rather than typing it from memory.
The second is the security type. Nearly every router made in the last decade uses WPA, WPA2 or WPA3, and all three use the WPA setting here. Pick WEP only if you are dealing with genuinely old hardware, and choose the open-network option only when there is no password at all. Selecting the wrong one produces a code that scans cleanly and then refuses to join.
If your network is hidden, tick the hidden box. Without it, the phone looks for a broadcasting network with that name, finds nothing, and gives up.
Where a WiFi QR code earns its keep
Cafes and restaurants get the most obvious benefit, usually as a small card on the table or a sticker by the counter. It removes the most repeated question staff answer all day.
Short-term rentals are the other strong case. A framed code in the kitchen means guests are online in the first minute instead of messaging you at 11pm about a password with an ambiguous character in it. Offices use them in meeting rooms for visitors, and event venues put them on badges and signage.
For a code that goes on printed material and stays there, it is worth designing rather than accepting the default square. The limitation worth knowing before you print
A WiFi QR code is static. The password is baked into the pattern, so if you change the WiFi password, every printed code stops working and has to be reprinted. There is no way around that, because there is no server in the middle to update.
