What a vCard QR code actually contains
vCard is the file format behind every contact card your phone has ever saved. A vCard QR code holds that whole record — name, phone, email, company, job title, website — as text inside the pattern, rather than a link pointing at it.
When someone scans it, the phone recognises the format and offers to add a contact. Everything lands in the right fields already: the number goes to phone, the address goes to email, the company goes to company. Nobody retypes anything, which is the entire point.
Because the data sits inside the code, it also works with no internet connection. Useful at trade shows, where venue wifi is usually the first thing to fail.
Putting one on a business card
The most common use is the back of a business card, and it works well because it solves the real problem with business cards: they get photographed, put in a pocket, and never typed into a phone. A scan takes two seconds and the contact is saved properly.
Keep the printed code at least 2cm across. Smaller than that and older phone cameras start to struggle, particularly in the dim lighting of a conference hall. Leave a clear white margin around the edges — the quiet zone — because a code that runs right up to the paper edge is much harder to read.
Only fill in the fields you actually want on the card. Every extra field makes the pattern denser, and a denser pattern needs to be printed larger to stay reliable. Name, phone, email and company is usually the right amount.
Static contact code or a trackable link
