Static QR codes are permanent and untrackable. Dynamic QR codes let you update the destination and track scans. Here's when to use each.

The difference between static and dynamic QR codes is one of the most important concepts in QR code marketing — yet it's rarely explained clearly.

Static QR Codes

A static QR code encodes your destination URL directly into the QR matrix. Once printed, it cannot be changed. If the destination URL changes, the old QR code is dead — you have to reprint.

  • No tracking — you can't see how many scans it got
  • Cannot be updated after printing
  • Simpler to create — works offline
  • Best for: WiFi credentials, vCards, product serial numbers, personal QR codes

Dynamic QR Codes

A dynamic QR code encodes a short URL (e.g. sl.ink/abc123). The short URL redirects to your real destination. You can change the redirect destination any time in your dashboard — the printed QR code never changes.

  • Full scan analytics — country, device, browser, time
  • Update destination any time without reprinting
  • Requires a URL shortener account (like ShortLink)
  • Best for: marketing campaigns, menus, packaging, signage, business cards
💡

For anything you're going to print in quantity or display for more than a week, always use a dynamic QR code. The ability to fix mistakes or update content without reprinting is worth it every time.
